Real Madrid have completed the signing of Ibrahima Konate from Liverpool, adding the France centre-back to their La Liga squad on a free transfer after his contract at Anfield expired.
ESPN reported that Real Madrid confirmed the move on June 18, while Cadena SER reported the club had made the signing official. Both outlets said Konate has agreed a contract with the Spanish club through 2030.
Konate Leaves Liverpool On Free Transfer
Konate, 27, arrives after five seasons at Liverpool. ESPN reported that negotiations over a new Liverpool contract had been ongoing since 2023 before breaking down, with the club confirming in May that the defender would leave when his deal expired.
The move gives Madrid an experienced central defender without a transfer fee, which matters in a summer when top-level centre-backs usually require either a long negotiation or a large release-clause payment. The deal is still a major salary and squad-planning commitment, but the transfer structure itself is clean.
Konate joined Liverpool from RB Leipzig in the summer of 2021 in a deal worth about 40 million pounds, according to ESPN. He made 183 appearances for the English club and won the Premier League, FA Cup and two Carabao Cups during his time at Anfield.
Madrid Add A Long-Term Centre-Back
For Real Madrid, the contract length is the central point. A deal through 2030 gives the club a defender who should be in his prime years for most of the agreement, and it adds size, pace and Champions League-level experience to the back line.
ESPN reported that Konate will compete with Antonio Rudiger, Dean Huijsen, Raul Asencio and Eder Militao for minutes in central defence. That group gives Madrid several right-sided and left-sided combinations, especially if injuries or workload force rotation across La Liga and European matches.
Cadena SER framed the signing as official and led with the contract running until 2030. ESPN added that Konate is currently with France at the World Cup and was an unused substitute in France's 3-1 win over Senegal in Tuesday's Group I opener.
Liverpool Lose Another Established Defender
Liverpool lose a regular first-team defender without a fee, even if the departure had been expected once contract talks collapsed. Konate had offered the club a blend of recovery speed and aerial presence alongside its other centre-backs, and his exit leaves another senior role for Liverpool to replace.
Madrid, meanwhile, get a player with Premier League title experience and no settling-in period for the pressure of a large club. His first practical hurdle is the depth chart: earning minutes in a Madrid defence that already includes Rudiger, Huijsen, Asencio and Militao.
