MADRID — Álvaro Arbeloa confirmed Friday what had seemed a formality for weeks: his tenure as Real Madrid coach will end after Saturday's La Liga match against Athletic Bilbao.
When asked whether the game would be his last, Arbeloa simply answered: "Yes."
The matchup already has enough history; the job is to keep the reading list shorter than the tension.
The Useful Context
The 43-year-old was promoted from the club's reserve team in January to replace Xabi Alonso, who was dismissed mid-season. Under Arbeloa, Madrid exited the Champions League quarterfinals to Bayern Munich and lost to a second-division opponent in the Copa del Rey—results that left little room for speculation about his future.
Spanish outlets report the club is seriously considering bringing back José Mourinho for a second stint, 13 years after his initial spell. Mourinho currently coaches Benfica and said he will decide his plans shortly.
The Part Still Unclear
Saturday also marks the final appearance for defenders Dani Carvajal and David Alaba, whose contracts expire. Carvajal, 34, has helped Real Madrid win six Champions Leagues since 2013. Alaba, 33, arrived in 2021 and contributed to two of those European Cup triumphs.
Arbeloa said he will seek "new challenges" after his first major coaching role. "I have already made the leap, improved greatly over these four months, and I feel prepared for new challenges," he said. "Starting Monday, I will think about them."
