Real Madrid finished with nine players in a 2-0 home defeat to Celta Vigo, losing for the first time this season at the Santiago Bernabeu in all competitions and falling farther behind Spanish league leader Barcelona.
Celta took control after the break, with Williot Swedberg scoring in the 54th minute from near the penalty spot. Fran García was sent off after a second yellow card in the 64th, and Álvaro Carreras was dismissed in stoppage time.
Swedberg then added Celta's second on a breakaway after Madrid had been reduced to nine players. Unused Madrid substitute Endrick also received a red card for protesting.
“We are all upset. It wasn't the game or the result that we wanted,” Real Madrid coach Xabi Alonso said. “The referee’s decisions threw us off balance. I didn’t like the refereeing.”
Vinícius Júnior and Kylian Mbappé both had chances to pull Madrid level before Celta sealed the result, but neither converted. Éder Militão left the match in the first half because of an injury.
Madrid next hosts Manchester City in the Champions League. Barcelona had beaten Real Betis 5-3, while Madrid remained just 1 point ahead of third-placed Villarreal, which has a game in hand.
Celta moved to 10th place with its second win in three league games.
Gazzaniga Errors Help Elche Beat Girona
Paulo Gazzaniga had another difficult match as Girona lost 3-0 at home to Elche. The Argentine goalkeeper's mistakes led to 2 Elche goals, including one after he passed the ball directly to an opponent inside the area while trying to find a defender.
Earlier, Gazzaniga failed to make a routine save on an angled shot at the near post. He had also struggled in Girona's opening league match, when errors led to a goal, a penalty and his ejection in a 3-1 loss to Rayo Vallecano.
Espanyol Edge Rayo Vallecano
Roberto Fernández converted a first-half penalty as fifth-placed Espanyol beat Rayo Vallecano 1-0 for its third straight league victory.
Rayo, 12th in the table, played with 10 men from the 64th minute after Unai López was sent off. Espanyol Tyrhys Dolan was shown red in the 87th.
Valencia Rescue Draw Against Sevilla
Valencia Hugo Duro scored in stoppage time to give 15th-placed Valencia a 1-1 home draw against 13th-placed Sevilla.
Sevilla, winless in three straight league games, had gone ahead through a César Tárrega own goal in the 58th minute.
