Lewandowski scores in farewell but Barcelona beaten by Valencia in final-day defeat

Valencia signed off their season with a comeback win that mattered everywhere except the standings. The hosts erased Barcelona's lead twice in nine second-half minutes, beating the champions 3-1 at Mestalla, though the three points still weren't enough for European qualification.

Robert Lewandowski gave Barcelona a deserved lead just past the hour, diverting Ferran Torres's volley toward goal for his 119th strike in four seasons. It was meant to be his farewell gift. Five minutes later, Javi Guerra levelled with a neat finish. Four minutes after that, Luis Rioja put Valencia ahead.

The matchup already has enough history; the job is to keep the reading list shorter than the tension.

The pattern was familiar and fast: Barcelona arrived, scored, then watched the game slip away in a blur of defensive errors. Guido Rodríguez added a third deep in stoppage time to seal the win, but Valencia still finished seventh behind Getafe and Rayo Vallecano. A win would have been enough. Instead, they got the points and the empty feeling of a season ending one place too low.

Lewandowski's goal was the outlier in an otherwise forgettable display. He leaves Barcelona as their second-highest scorer in the post-Messi era, which is less a legacy than a reminder of the gap he was asked to fill.
