Girona, Mallorca relegated as La Liga season ends

The bottom of La Liga shifted one final time, and there were no miracles left. Girona and Mallorca both needed wins and other results to go their way on the season's last day. Neither circumstance arrived.

Relegation battles decided

Girona hosted Elche knowing a victory would keep the club in the top division. The team managed only a 1-1 draw — the same result that sealed Elche's safety. Just two seasons past, Girona finished third in La Liga.

The numbers are doing most of the announcement work here, which is usually how teams prefer it.

Mallorca defeated last-placed Real Oviedo 3-0, but goal difference against Osasuna and Levante proved cruel. The club joins Girona and Oviedo in the second division next season.

"I am torn up. It's our fault we are going down," Mallorca midfielder Sergi Darder said after the final whistle.

Celta Vigo secured sixth place and a Europa League spot by beating Sevilla 1-0. Getafe claimed seventh and Conference League qualification with a 1-0 win over Osasuna.

Barcelona, Real Madrid, Villarreal, Atletico Madrid and Real Betis had already locked the top five positions and their Champions League places before the final round. The season concludes Sunday with Atletico visiting Villarreal to settle third place.

Lewandowski's send-off

Robert Lewandowski netted his final goal for Barcelona in a 3-1 defeat at Valencia. The 37-year-old striker and Barcelona agreed to part ways this summer after four seasons at the club.

His goal at Mestalla Stadium was his 120th in blue and burgundy. Barcelona clinched the league title with three rounds still to play.

Real Madrid departures

Dani Carvajal received ovations from the Santiago Bernabeu crowd and wept when substituted in his final appearance for Real Madrid. The veteran right back assisted Gonzalo García for the opening goal before Jude Bellingham and Kylian Mbappé added strikes in a 3-1 win over Athletic Bilbao.

Carvajal, 34, helped the club win six Champions League titles since 2013 as first-choice right back — until Trent Alexander-Arnold's arrival this season.

"Today I can't stop recalling the golden age we shared," Carvajal told the stadium through tears after the game.

Coach Álvaro Arbeloa also parted ways, four months after replacing Xabi Alonso. Real Madrid finished second and without a trophy this campaign. Spanish outlets report José Mourinho is near a return to the club.

David Alaba played his last match for Madrid. Former Chelsea defender César AzpilicuetA, 36, retired after Sevilla visited Celta, ending a career that included two Premier League titles and the 2021 Champions League with Chelsea.
