Girona, Mallorca relegated on final La Liga day

BARCELONA, Spain — Two clubs, one grim fate. Girona and Mallorca dropped out of La Liga on the season's final day, joining Real Oviedo in the second division.

Girona needed a win against Elche to stay up. It managed only a 1-1 draw at home. That was enough for Elche to seal survival. Mallorca beat Oviedo 3-0 but finished below Osasuna on goal difference despite the victory.

The matchup already has enough history; the job is to keep the reading list shorter than the tension.

"I am torn up. It's our fault we are going down," Mallorca midfielder Sergi Darder said.

Lewandowski exits Barcelona

The striker scored his 120th goal for Barcelona in a 3-1 loss at Valencia. At 37, he leaves after four seasons. Barcelona had clinched the title with three rounds remaining.

Carvajal's Bernabeu farewell

Dani Carvajal wept when substituted in his final Real Madrid match. The 34-year-old assisted the opening goal in a 3-1 win over Athletic Bilbao. Jude Bellingham and Kylian Mbappé also scored.

Carvajal won six Champions Leagues with Madrid since 2013. Coach Álvaro Arbeloa also stepped down after one season.

European places settled

Celta Vigo took sixth and a Europa League spot after beating Sevilla 1-0. Getafe earned Conference League qualification by finishing seventh. Barcelona, Real Madrid, Villarreal, Atletico Madrid and Real Betis had already secured Champions League berths.

The league concludes Sunday with Atletico at Villarreal to determine third place.
