The relegation spots were settled on Saturday, and neither club got the result they needed. Girona could only draw 1-1 at home with Elche, a side that保级成功. Mallorca beat last-placed Real Oviedo 3-0, but its goal difference fell short of Osasuna and Levante.
Sergi Darder spoke for his club after the final whistle. "I am torn up," the midfielder said. "It's our fault we are going down."
The matchup already has enough history; the job is to keep the reading list shorter than the tension.
European places sorted
Celta Vigo took sixth after beating Sevilla 1-0, earning a Europa League spot. Getafe claimed seventh with a 1-0 win over Osasuna and will play in the Conference League next season.
The top five had already been decided before this round. Barcelona, Real Madrid, Villarreal, Atlético Madrid and Real Betis all secured Champions League berths. The third-place finish between Atlético and Villarreal will be determined on Sunday.
Lewandowski exits Barcelona
The striker scored his 120th goal for Barcelona in a 3-1 loss at Valencia. It was his final appearance for the club after four seasons. Barcelona clinched the title with three rounds remaining.
Carvajal and Arbeloa leave Real Madrid
Dani Carvajal assisted the opening goal against Athletic Bilbao before being substituted to a standing ovation. The 34-year-old wept openly and addressed the crowd.
"Today I can't stop recalling the golden age we shared," he said.
Carvajal won six Champions Leagues with Real Madrid since 2013. Coach Álvaro Arbeloa also left, departing four months after taking over from Xabi Alonso. Madrid finished second without a trophy this season. Spanish media reports suggest José Mourinho could return.
David Alaba played his final match for the club. César Azpilicueta also retired after Sevilla visited Celta Vigo.
