Arbeloa confirms leaving Real Madrid after trophyless spell as head coach

The Decision Behind The Move

MADRID — Álvaro Arbeloa confirmed Friday what Spanish media had been reporting for weeks: Saturday's La Liga match against Athletic Bilbao will be his last as Real Madrid head coach.

When asked directly whether the game would be his final appearance on the bench, Arbeloa simply answered, "Yes."

That is usually how club statements work: the wording stays calm while the room clearly has not.

He was promoted in January from the club's reserve team to replace the fired Xabi Alonso, stepping into a role that was always understood to be temporary. The team managed just one point from his first three matches and lost to a second-division side in the Copa del Rey in his debut. That sort of start tends to write its own ending.

The Job Ahead

Real Madrid subsequently exited the Champions League quarterfinals to Bayern Munich and will finish runners-up to Barcelona in La Liga. With out a trophy to show for four months of work, the writing was on the wall well before Arbeloa spoke.

Spanish outlets report the club is actively considering bringing back José Mourinho for a third stint, more than a decade after his first spell ended. Mourinho currently manages Benfica and is expected to confirm his own plans shortly.

"I have already made the leap, improved greatly over the last four months, and I feel prepared for new challenges," Arbeloa said. "Starting Monday, I will think about the next step."

The Pressure That Remains

Saturday's fixture will also serve as a farewell for two veterans whose contracts expire this summer. Right back Dani Carvajal, 34, leaves after helping win six Champions League titles since 2013. David Alaba, 33, departs having contributed to two European Cup wins since joining in 2021.

Three high-profile exits in one late-May game is perhaps the most honest summary of this season that Madrid could offer.
