Álvaro Arbeloa says his time as Real Madrid coach ends this weekend.
Departure confirmed
Speaking at a press conference Friday, Arbeloa confirmed the La Liga match against Athletic Bilbao on Saturday will be his final game in charge.
"Yes," Arbeloa replied when asked if the fixture would be his last.
The 43-year-old was appointed in January after replacing Xabi Alonso, who was dismissed.Madrid failed to win a trophy during his tenure. The team suffered a defeat to a second-division side in the Copa del Rey in his first match and was eliminated by Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarterfinals. Barcelona has already secured the La Liga title.
Mourinho speculation
Spanish media reports suggest the club is considering bringing back José Mourinho for a second spell, 13 years after his previous stint. Mourinho currently coaches Benfica and said he will decide his future shortly.
"I have already made the leap, improved greatly over these four months, and I feel prepared for new challenges," Arbeloa said. "Starting Monday, I will think about them."
Farewells for Carvajal and Alaba
Saturday's match also marks the end for two veteran defenders.
Dani Carvajal, 34, and David Alaba, 33, are leaving as their contracts expire. Right back Carvajal has been part of six Champions League-winning sides since 2013. Alaba arrived in 2021 and contributed to two of those European Cup victories.
