Mallorca, Girona relegated as La Liga season comes

BARCELONA (AP) — Girona and Mallorca were sent down to the second division on the final day of the La Liga season, while Robert Lewandowski and Dani Carvajal made their farewells.

Girona needed to beat Elche at home to avoid the drop but could only manage a 1-1 draw. That result gave Elche safety while Girona, who finished third just two seasons ago, will play in Segunda División next season alongside Mallorca and last-placed Real Oviedo.

Mallorca defeated Oviedo 3-0 but it was not enough. The Islanders lost out on goal difference to both Osasuna and Levante, joining Girona and Oviedo in relegation.

"I am torn up. It's our fault we are going down," Mallorca midfielder Sergi Darder said.

Celta Vigo sealed sixth place and a Europa League spot by beating Sevilla 1-0. Getafe claimed seventh and Conference League qualification with a 1-0 win over Osasuna.

Barcelona, Real Madrid, Villarreal, Atletico Madrid and Real Betis had already secured the top five positions and Champions League berths before the final round.

The season concludes Sunday with Atletico Madrid visiting Villarreal to determine third place.

Lewandowski scores final goal for Barcelona

Lewandowski found the net in his last appearance for Barcelona, scoring the champions' lone goal in a 3-1 defeat at Valencia. The 37-year-old striker and Barcelona agreed to part ways this summer after four seasons at the club.

His goal at Mestalla Stadium was No. 120 in blue and garnet. Barcelona wrapped up the league title with three matches remaining.

Carvajal, Arbeloa depart Real Madrid

Carvajal received ovations from the Santiago Bernabeu crowd and wept after being substituted in his final game for Real Madrid. The veteran right back, whose contract expires, assisted Gonzalo García for the opening goal in a 3-1 win over Athletic Bilbao.

Jude Bellingham and Kylian Mbappé added further goals for Real Madrid.

"Today I can't stop recalling the golden age we shared," a tearful Carvajal told the stadium after the match.

Carvajal, 34, helped Madrid win six Champions League titles since 2013 as first-choice right back until the arrival of Trent Alexander-Arnold this season.

Coach Álvaro Arbeloa also stepped down four months after replacing Xabi Alonso. Madrid finished second this campaign without a trophy.

Spanish media reports speculate that José Mourinho could return to manage Madrid.

Defender David Alaba made his last appearance for the club. Former Chelsea defender César Azpilicueta played his final professional match before retiring when Sevilla visited Celta. The 36-year-old Azpilicueta won multiple trophies with Chelsea, including two Premier Leagues and the 2021 Champions League as team captain.
