Barcelona clinched its second consecutive Spanish league title and 29th overall with a commanding 2-0 victory over Real Madrid at Camp Nou on Sunday, establishing an insurmountable 14-point advantage with three rounds remaining.
Goals by Marcus Rashford in the 9th minute and Ferran Torres in the 18th sealed the win for the Catalan club, marking their third league title in four seasons.
Flick loses father ahead of clasico
Barcelona coach Hansi Flick was in the dugout for Sunday's clasico following the death of his father, which the club announced hours before kickoff. Players from both teams wore black armbands and there was a moment of silence before the match.
"I will never forget this day. It was a tough day for me... my team is fantastic," Flick said after the final whistle. "This is like a family and they gave everything today. It's amazing to win La Liga in this stadium against Real Madrid."
Rashford opened the scoring with a spectacular free kick, curling the ball over the wall into the top corner. Torres doubled the lead from inside the area after a flick from Dani Olmo.
Madrid's troubled season continues
Real Madrid, which remains the most successful club in the league with 36 trophies, is ending a second consecutive season without a major title.
Sunday's defeat capped a difficult week for Madrid, marked by altercations between players in training that led the club to fine Federico Valverde and Aurélien Tchouaméni 500,000 euros each.
Mbappé was absent with a left-hamstring injury, the league's leading scorer with 24 goals failed to recover from an issue that has kept him sidelined since late April.
The loss is likely to increase criticism of coach Álvaro Arbeloa, who was promoted from Madrid's reserve team when Xabi Alonso was fired in January.
"There's not a lot we can say. We understand how frustrated the fans must be. The only thing we can do is work and look to the future," Arbeloa said.
Barcelona has been playing without injured star Lamine Yamal, who was on the field lifting the trophy with his teammates after the match.
