The Chicago White Sox activated catcher Kyle Teel from the 60-day injured list Monday and optioned catcher Edgar Quero to Triple-A Charlotte, reshaping their catching mix before a series opener against the Cleveland Guardians.
The move was listed on the White Sox official transaction page and detailed by MLB.com, which reported that Teel was returned from his injury rehabilitation assignment at Charlotte, reinstated from the injured list and placed back on Chicago's active roster. The corresponding move sent Quero to the Charlotte Knights.
Teel Returns After Two Injury Stops
Teel, 24, has not played in the majors this season. MLB.com reported that he strained his right hamstring during Team Italy's World Baseball Classic game against the United States on March 10, then sustained a sprained lateral collateral ligament in his right knee on May 16 during his first rehab stint with Charlotte.
The White Sox moved Teel to the 60-day injured list on May 19. He went back out on a second rehab assignment June 16, and the official transactions page shows Chicago activating him six days later.
The short rehab run gave the White Sox some evidence that Teel's bat was ready. MLB.com credited him with an 8-for-16 line, one home run, four RBIs and five runs in four games with the Knights during that second assignment, including a five-hit game Friday at Buffalo.
That matters because Chicago is not treating this as a ceremonial return. The White Sox were 39-37 entering Monday, one game behind Cleveland in the American League Central, according to MLB.com's team report. A catcher coming off two injuries is not a magic fix, but a healthy Teel gives manager Will Venable another left-handed bat and restores one of the club's more productive young players.
Quero Sent Out As Roster Rebalances
Quero, 23, heads back to Charlotte after 55 games with the White Sox this season. MLB.com listed him at .187/.253/.233 with two home runs, 15 RBIs and 12 runs, a tough enough line that the roster move does not need much decoding.
The catcher switch also fills the 40-man roster. MLB.com said the move increased Chicago's 40-man count to 40, while Teel's player page shows him as active after the June 22 transaction.
Teel's broader track record is why the activation carries more weight than a routine injury-list transaction. In 78 games as a rookie in 2025, he hit .273/.375/.411 with 11 doubles, eight home runs, 35 RBIs, 38 runs and 37 walks. MLB.com also noted that he was acquired from the Boston Red Sox on Dec. 11, 2024, in the Garrett Crochet trade that brought Teel, Chase Meidroth, Braden Montgomery and Wikelman González to Chicago.
For the White Sox, the immediate news is simple and concrete: Teel is active, Quero is in Charlotte, and Chicago gets another look at whether one of the key pieces from the Crochet trade can affect a division race that is still tight enough to notice.
