The Selection Puzzle
PSV Eindhoven fullback Sergiño Dest is generating transfer interest from Bayern Munich, though any move would likely require him to eclipse his own historic mark as the most expensive American defender ever.
Dest secured that distinction in 2020 when Ajax sold him to Barcelona for €21 million, roughly $24.5 million at the time. The Catalan club signed him after then-manager Ronald Koeman personally requested his services, but injuries plagued his tenure in Spain.
The numbers are doing most of the announcement work here, which is usually how teams prefer it.
The Fitness Questions
By summer 2024, Barcelona were eager to offload his remaining salary and allowed Dest to join PSV on a free transfer with one year left on his contract. The deal included a percentage of any future sale—meaning Barcelona could profit significantly this summer should Bayern follow through on interest.
The German giants have placed Dest on their shortlist of prospective transfers, according to Dutch outlet ED. If Bayern convince PSV to sell, the fee could reach $29 million, making Dest the sixth-most expensive U.S. transfer in soccer history.
The Warm-Up Before It Counts
On the international stage, injuries delayed Dest's first appearance under new USMNT manager Mauricio Pochettino until September. Following a defeat to South Korea in New Jersey, Pochettino switched to a three-center-back system, a tactical shift that paid immediate dividends in a win over Japan.
The formation change granted Dest increased attacking latitude. Last weekend's friendly against Senegal saw him capitalize on that freedom, scoring from close range early in the match.
