Uruguay's Araujo Seeks Treatment at Barcelona With World

The Lineup Loses Its Shape

Ronald Araujo will return to Barcelona for medical treatment on a muscle strain, with the Uruguay Football Association confirming the center back will miss team training on Monday before traveling back to Spain for express care.

The AUF stated that professionals who have treated Araujo previously will handle his recovery, with the player expected to rejoin the squad on Tuesday ahead of Uruguay's trip to Miami for their World Cup preparations. The defender has not been removed from the roster, with manager Marcelo Bielsa hopeful he will be fit enough to play a significant role this summer.

The Replacement Question

That is the kind of injury timeline that turns roster planning into calendar management. Uruguay face Saudi Arabia on June 15 in Miami, giving Araujo an extremely tight window to recover from the strain.

Local reports suggest those close to Araujo have no concerns over his broader World Cup involvement, although his availability for the opening game against Saudi Arabia remains uncertain. Six days later, Uruguay face Cabo Verde in the same venue, a fixture that may represent a more realistic return target depending on how the strain responds to treatment.

The Waiting Game

If Araujo is unavailable, captain José María Giménez will likely be partnered by either Wolverhampton Wanderers' Santiago Bueno or Club América's Sebastián Cáceres in central defense. The final group stage match against Spain on June 27 could decide Group H's top spot, though Uruguay expect to progress regardless.
