Philadelphia Phillies shortstop Trea Turner left Monday's 7-0 win over the Miami Marlins at Citizens Bank Park with a right wrist contusion after being hit by a 96.9 mph fastball, MLB.com reported. X-rays were negative.
Turner was struck by Marlins right-hander William Kempner in the bottom of the sixth inning, stayed in the game briefly and was replaced before the eighth. ESPN's scoreboard confirmed the Marlins-Phillies game as final, with Philadelphia winning 7-0.
Turner Leaves After Sixth-Inning HBP
MLB.com reported that Alec Bohm entered at third base after Turner left, with Edmundo Sosa sliding over to shortstop. Turner was unavailable for comment after the game.
Interim manager Don Mattingly told MLB.com that Turner looked likely to be sore and that the Phillies would see where the injury stood Tuesday. The club avoided the worst immediate news with the negative X-rays, but the next check is whether soreness limits Turner's availability.
Phillies Already Managing Turner's Slump
The injury came on a night when Turner went 0-for-3 before exiting. MLB.com noted that the reigning National League batting champion's average dropped to .216, with a .594 OPS that ranked near the bottom among qualified hitters at the time of his departure.
Mattingly had been asked recently about whether Turner might need a break, but MLB.com reported that he kept backing his shortstop before Monday's game. Turner had already been moved out of the leadoff spot on May 26, though Mattingly had not moved him lower than No. 2.
Sosa Move Would Affect Outfield Mix
If Turner misses time, MLB.com identified Sosa as the most likely shortstop replacement. That would affect more than one infield spot because Sosa had been part of Philadelphia's outfield alignment.
The Phillies had been using Brandon Marsh as an everyday outfielder, with Sosa and Derek Hill starting against left-handed pitching and Justin Crawford and Gabriel Rincones Jr. starting against right-handers. Moving Sosa back to shortstop would reduce that platoon flexibility.
The immediate takeaway is narrow but important for Philadelphia: Turner's X-rays were negative, but his right wrist was sore enough to end his night, leaving the Phillies to reassess a key lineup spot after a 7-0 win.
