Tottenham Hotspur have agreed a £52 million ($69.8m) deal to sign Brighton & Hove Albion defender Jan Paul van Hecke, sources told ESPN, giving the Premier League club a major defensive addition for Roberto De Zerbi's rebuild.
The fee is fixed, with no add-ons, and personal terms are expected to be finalised in the coming days, ESPN reported. That distinction matters: the agreement is a source-backed transfer deal, not yet a club announcement that every contract step has been completed.
De Zerbi Pushes For Van Hecke Reunion
ESPN reported that De Zerbi pushed for Van Hecke's arrival after previously working with the 26-year-old at Brighton. That gives the move a clear football logic beyond simply adding another centre-back: Spurs are targeting a defender already familiar to their manager.
Van Hecke joined Brighton from NAC Breda in 2020, then went on loan to NAC Breda and Heerenveen before becoming a regular at the south-coast club. ESPN credited him with 131 Brighton appearances.
He is also part of the Netherlands squad at the 2026 World Cup, alongside Tottenham defender Micky van de Ven. For Spurs, that adds another international-level option to a back line that has been a clear focus of the summer window.
Brighton Interest In Vuskovic Treated Separately
Tottenham had an initial bid for Van Hecke rejected before talks progressed, according to ESPN. The same report said the Van Hecke agreement is considered separate from Brighton's interest in Spurs defender Luka Vuskovic.
Spurs have rejected a £35m bid from Brighton for Vuskovic, ESPN reported. That matters because the two clubs have been speaking across the same defensive market, but the Van Hecke deal is not being framed as a simple swap.
The structure also explains why this is a fresh development from earlier Brighton-Tottenham talks. A rejected opening bid has turned into an agreed fixed fee, while the Vuskovic question remains unresolved.
Spurs Add Another Defensive Piece
Van Hecke is set to become Tottenham's third summer signing after Marcos Senesi and Andy Robertson arrived on free transfers from Bournemouth and Liverpool respectively, ESPN reported.
The deal could also affect the outlook for club captain Cristian Romero, with Atletico Madrid among the clubs interested in him this summer. Spurs are not just adding depth; they are reshaping the centre-back group while questions remain over who stays.
For De Zerbi, the practical value is immediate. Tottenham are moving for a defender he knows, at a fixed Premier League-to-Premier League price, before personal terms are completed and before the rest of the back-line market settles.
