The San Jose Earthquakes have acquired forward Darius Johnson from Phoenix Rising FC, adding the Grenada international to their Major League Soccer roster on a contract that runs through 2026.
MLSsoccer.com reported the move on its Transfer Tracker page, citing the club announcement. The deal includes club options through the 2027-28 season, and Johnson will occupy an international roster slot.
Johnson Joins San Jose Attack
Johnson arrives from the USL Championship after playing for Phoenix Rising. Earthquakes sporting director and head coach Bruce Arena said the club noticed him during a U.S. Open Cup match against San Jose and pointed to his pace and versatility as reasons for the signing.
The MLS report lists Johnson as 26 and says he has six goals and 10 assists across 101 matches with Phoenix and Dutch side FC Volendam. He also spent time with Chelsea FC's Under-23 team.
Born in England, Johnson represents Grenada internationally. MLSsoccer.com credited him with two goals in 15 caps for Grenada, giving San Jose another attacking option with both club and national-team experience.
Transfer Tracker Move Adds Depth
The transaction is a roster-building move rather than a marquee splash, but it gives San Jose another forward profile while MLS teams manage summer absences, fixture congestion and international-slot math.
The club did not announce a transfer fee in the league article. The verified terms are narrower: Johnson is under contract through 2026, San Jose hold club options through 2027-28, and he takes an international roster slot.
For the Earthquakes, the useful part is flexibility. Arena's comments frame Johnson as an attacker who can stretch play and complement the existing group, and the option years give San Jose time to evaluate whether that translates from USL and European experience into MLS minutes.
