Red Bull New York have signed midfielder Ronald Donkor to a three-and-a-half-year contract extension, keeping the 21-year-old with the Major League Soccer club through the 2029-30 season.
The New York Post reported that Donkor's new agreement includes an option for the 2030-31 season. He had been in the final year of the original contract he signed with the Red Bulls in 2023.
Donkor Commits To Red Bulls Long Term
Red Bulls head of sport Julian de Guzman said in a club statement carried by the Post that Donkor has become an important member of the club and praised his work rate. The extension turns that development into a longer roster commitment.
Donkor, from Accra, Ghana, began his career with Guidars FC in Mali before joining Red Bull New York. The Post reported that he has set career highs this MLS season with 14 starts, four assists and 1,183 minutes played.
He also scored his first MLS goal in April, during a 4-4 draw against D.C. United. That match had an added club note: Red Bulls head of global soccer Jurgen Klopp was in attendance.
MLS Break Comes With Roster Clarity
The timing gives New York a contract decision settled during the World Cup break in the MLS schedule. The Red Bulls entered the pause at 6-5-4, fifth in the Eastern Conference, after taking points from four straight matches.
Donkor credited head coach Michael Bradley and assistant Ibrahim Sekagya earlier this season for helping his development, according to the Post. Bradley described him as an integral part of the team and said the midfielder has a bright future.
The deal is not a marquee transfer, and it does not need to be one. For the Red Bulls, the verified move is straightforward: a young midfielder who has moved into a bigger role is now tied to the club for several more MLS seasons.
