Rasmus Højlund Joins Napoli Permanently After Champions League Clause Triggers

Rasmus Højlund has joined Napoli on a permanent transfer from Manchester United after the Serie A club's Champions League qualification triggered the move, according to ESPN.

The deal totals GBP43.2 million, or $58.1 million, including last season's loan fee. ESPN reported the permanent element is worth around GBP38 million, or $51 million.

Napoli Keep Højlund After Champions League Trigger

Højlund spent last season on loan with Napoli, and the arrangement became permanent once Napoli secured Champions League football. That condition turns what had been a temporary exit from Manchester United into a full transfer to Serie A.

For Napoli, the move keeps a striker already familiar with the squad and league. For United, it gives accounting clarity on a player who arrived at Old Trafford for a much larger fee and was moved on after the club reshaped its attack.

Højlund left Atalanta for Manchester United in 2023 in a deal worth GBP72 million, or $96.8 million. He scored 26 goals in 95 appearances for United before spending last season in Italy.

Manchester United Offset Part Of Éderson Commitment

ESPN reported that the permanent portion of the Højlund deal is expected to cover the fee Manchester United committed to Atalanta for midfielder Éderson.

United agreed a deal for Éderson worth an initial GBP35 million, or $47 million, plus performance-related add-ons, according to the report. The two moves are separate transactions, but the Højlund money gives United room as it continues to rework the squad.

The striker's departure also reflects a changed attacking plan at Old Trafford. ESPN said Højlund was moved on last summer after Benjamin Sesko arrived from RB Leipzig.

More United Exits Still Expected

Manchester United are expecting further departures this summer. ESPN reported that Casemiro, Tyrell Malacia and Jadon Sancho are all leaving on free transfers.

The club are also anticipating interest from Italy in striker Joshua Zirkzee and from Türkiye for second-choice goalkeeper Altay Bayindir, while United are open to offers for midfielder Manuel Ugarte.

Marcus Rashford and Andre Onana are another part of the same squad-reset picture after spending last season on loan at Barcelona and Trabzonspor, respectively. ESPN reported that Barcelona can trigger a permanent Rashford deal for GBP26 million, or $35 million, before June 15, and that Onana has been told he is not part of Michael Carrick's plans for next season.

Højlund's move is the completed piece in that wider process: Napoli retain him after meeting the Champions League condition, while United convert a loan exit into funds tied to another midfield addition.
