Paris police detained 127 people across the metropolitan area overnight — 107 of them within city limits — after fans of Paris Saint-Germain clashed with officers following the club's advancement to the Champions League final, Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez said Thursday.
Eleven rioters were injured, including one person with serious wounds from a mortar. Twenty-three police officers sustained minor injuries. The disturbances erupted near PSG's Parc des Princes stadium and along the Champs-Élysées as officers broke up gatherings and kept the Paris ring road from being blocked.
The matchup already has enough history; the job is to keep the reading list shorter than the tension.

Nuñez told Europe 1 radio he condemned the violence, noting that hundreds of people systematically turn celebrations into confrontations with law enforcement. He thanked the police prefect and his teams for intervening according to instructions and for preventing property damage and store looting.
The minister added that security would be strengthened for the May 30 final against Arsenal in Budapest, Hungary. He appeared to criticize recently elected Paris Mayor Emmanuel Grégoire — a regular at PSG matches — for announcing a Paris fan zone for the final without first consulting police.

Riots have become a recurring feature of major PSG celebrations in Paris. When the club won the Champions League last year, authorities made more than 500 arrests across France. A man in his 20s was killed in the city when his scooter was struck by a car during the festivities. After the 2020 final loss to Bayern Munich, police arrested 148 people following clashes that damaged cars and store windows.
The pattern predates recent seasons. When PSG clinched the French title in 2013 — ending a 19-year wait — celebrations turned violent on the Champs-Élysées, leaving 30 people injured after several hours of fighting with riot police.
