The Injury Changes the Math
PARIS — Paris Saint-Germain could clinch a second straight Ligue 1 crown as early as this weekend, provided Lens stumbles against a Nantes side fighting for survival.
PSG holds a six-point lead over Lens with three matches remaining for each team. The decisive showdown between the two was rescheduled from April 11 and will now take place in Lens midweek. That fixture shift was made to give PSG additional recovery time ahead of their Champions League final appearance, which they secured by eliminating Bayern Munich on Wednesday.
The mathematics are straightforward: if Nantes, sitting next-to-last and facing automatic relegation to Ligue 2, can take points off Lens on Friday, PSG will be champions regardless of their own result against Brest on Sunday.
The scramble for third place and the accompanying automatic Champions League spot has narrowed to a two-horse race. Lyon holds a two-point advantage over Lille and travels to mid-table Toulouse, while Lille faces a trickier test at Monaco, who sit sixth and remain formidable at home.
The Immediate Problem
Rennes, five points back in fifth, still harbors slim hopes but needs both Lyon and Lille to falter. They host a Paris FC side that has improved markedly since Antoine Kombouaré took charge, losing only once in nine games.
Marseille's turbulent season has left a dressing room reportedly at breaking point. Coach Habib Beye has doubled training sessions without results, and a fifth defeat in seven games would further damage a campaign that has already seen third place slip from reach.
At the bottom, Auxerre occupies the relegation-promotion playoff spot in 16th but can move into 15th on goal difference with a victory over Nice.
Lens will be missing five regulars against Nantes. Goal-scoring wingers Florian Thauvin and Allan Saint-Maximin are being rested as a precautionary measure, coach Pierre Sage said. Mali midfielder Mamadou Sangaré, Saudi Arabia right back Saud Abdulhamid and all-action midfielder Adrien Thomasson are all suspended. PSG right back Achraf Hakimi remains sidelined with a hamstring injury.
The Calendar Gets Tight
On the personnel front, Mousa Al-Tamari scored a brilliant angled volley last Sunday and remains in rich form in Rennes' attack. Teammate Esteban Lepaul sits atop the scoring charts and needs one goal to reach 20 in a comeback season after being released by Lyon a few years ago. English forward Mason Greenwood has not scored since March 7 and remains stuck on 15 league goals.
Marseille duo Nayef Aguerd, nursing a groin injury, and Hamed Traoré, dealing with a thigh problem, will both miss the remaining games.
Female soccer fans of Bordeaux have complained of being subjected to abusive body searches carried out by security officials before a fourth-tier game at Bayonne on Saturday. The Ultramarines supporters group posted a statement on X describing several women reporting humiliating and degrading acts during pat downs when entering the stadium. The incidents were reported to Her Game Too, an organization advocating for the protection of female sports fans in stadiums.
