Portugal and Spain will meet in the Round of 16 at the FIFA World Cup on July 6, sending two of the tournament’s most recognizable teams into a knockout match at Dallas Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
Spain reached the matchup first with a 3-0 win over Austria in Los Angeles. Mikel Oyarzabal scored twice for Roja, and Pedro Porro added the other goal as Spain moved into the Round of 16 for the third straight World Cup.
The result completed a strong group-stage path for Spain, which won its Group and drew Austria in the knockout stage after Austria finished second in its Group. Spain now carries that form into a match against Portugal with a place in the final eight at stake.
Portugal arrived by surviving Croatia 2-1 in Toronto in one of the tournament’s sharper knockout games so far. The Portuguese fell behind 1-0 in the second half before Cristiano Ronaldo converted a penalty kick for his first goal in the World Cup knockout stage.
Goncalo Ramos then gave Portugal the win with a header in the fourth minute of stoppage time. Croatia appeared to have produced an equalizer near the end of stoppage time, but VAR ruled the goal offside and Portugal moved on.
Portugal’s route to this point was less direct than Spain’s. The Portuguese drew twice and won once in the preliminary round, finishing second in their Group behind Colombia before facing Croatia.
According to FIFA, Spain is ranked No. 3 in the world, while Portugal sits seventh. The ranking gap is narrow enough to match the stakes: a heavyweight Round of 16 game in Texas, with the winner moving within one victory of the World Cup semifinals.
