The Pistons acquired the draft rights to Ugonna Onyenso after a chain of trades involving the Rockets and Knicks during the 2026 NBA Draft, according to Michael Scotto of USA Today.
The Rockets selected Onyenso with the No. 53 overall pick, then sent his rights to the Knicks. Detroit later received those rights when the Knicks moved the No. 53 pick to the Pistons for cash considerations.
The Knicks had earlier acquired the No. 39 and No. 53 picks, along with a 2029 second-round selection, from the Rockets. In that deal, the Rockets received the No. 31 and No. 55 selections in the 2026 draft.
Onyenso is a 6-foot-11 center who played at Virginia during the 2025-26 campaign. He appeared in 36 games off the bench and averaged 6.5 points, 4.9 rebounds, 2.9 blocks, 0.6 assists and 0.6 steals in 18.6 minutes per contest.
His shot-blocking production is the clearest part of his profile entering Detroit's system. A center averaging 2.9 blocks in 18.6 minutes gives the Pistons a rim-protection option to evaluate after the draft-night move.
Onyenso is not guaranteed a steady role with Detroit. His path to playing time could depend on the Pistons' center depth and whether injuries create minutes in that group.
