Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Adolis Garcia will undergo right latissimus dorsi repair surgery on Wednesday, June 24, ending his 2026 MLB season, MLB Trade Rumors reported from the club's announcement.
The Phillies placed Garcia on the 60-day injured list two days after he left a game against the Toronto Blue Jays. MLBTR reported that the recovery window is six to eight months, with Garcia expected to be ready for the start of the 2027 schedule.
Garcia Surgery Ends Phillies Season
The injury happened when Garcia came up throwing from the outfield as George Springer tried to score from third on a fly out by Kazuma Okamoto. Garcia completed the throw, Springer was safe, and the Phillies outfielder left after receiving attention from the training staff.
Garcia is already on the 60-day IL and will remain there through the rest of the campaign. He is also due to become a free agent at the end of the season, so the surgery affects both Philadelphia's right-field plans and Garcia's next market.
The Phillies signed Garcia to a one-year, $10 million deal in December after moving on from Nick Castellanos before the season. The club released Castellanos in February, making Garcia the intended short-term answer in right field.
Phillies Right Field Search Sharpens
That plan did not get much time to settle. Garcia hit .195/.270/.329 and struck out at a 32.4% rate before the injury, according to MLBTR. Philadelphia has since used Gabriel Rincones Jr. and Edmundo Sosa as part of its outfield cover.
Garcia's prior track record is why the Phillies took the bet. He had productive seasons with the Texas Rangers from 2021 through 2023 and helped Texas win the 2023 World Series, though MLBTR noted his line slipped to .225/.278/.397 across 2024 and 2025 before the Rangers non-tendered him.
The immediate effect is clearer than the long-term one: Philadelphia has lost its offseason right-field fix before July, and Garcia will enter the winter trying to show he is healthy enough to restart his career after surgery.
