The Philadelphia Union waived defender Olivier Mbaizo, MLSsoccer.com reported, ending the fullback's run with the MLS club after more than eight seasons in Philadelphia.
MLS listed the move as a waived transaction and said the Union announced it Wednesday. Mbaizo, 28, joined Philadelphia in 2018 and became a long-serving piece on the right side of the back line.
Mbaizo Leaves After 156 Union Matches
Mbaizo contributed 13 assists in 156 matches across all competitions with the Union, according to MLSsoccer.com. The league site also credited him as part of two Supporters' Shield-winning squads during his time with the club.
The transaction removes a veteran fullback from a Union roster already working through a staff transition. Philadelphia named Ryan Richter interim head coach after parting ways with Bradley Carnell in late May, with Jon Scheer moving into the sporting director role.
Scheer thanked Mbaizo for his dedication, professionalism and impact on the organization in the club's announcement. The move itself is clean roster business: no transfer fee was reported, and MLS categorized the player as waived.
Cameroon International Hits Open Market
Mbaizo also carries international experience. MLSsoccer.com lists him with 14 appearances for Cameroon and notes that he was part of Cameroon's roster for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
That background should keep the transaction relevant beyond Philadelphia. MLS clubs often use the summer window to rebalance roster spots, and Mbaizo leaves with a resume that includes league minutes, postseason-level club experience and national-team recognition.
