MANCHESTER, England — Pep Guardiola struggled to contain emotions on the sideline as he concluded a decade-long tenure at Manchester City, ending with a 2-1 defeat against Aston Villa in a deeply emotional final match at Etihad Stadium.
"I never could have imagined the amount of love I've found," Guardiola said, standing at the center of the field and addressing the crowd. "It is an incredible, tremendous honor to be your manager, to be here 10 years."
The matchup already has enough history; the job is to keep the reading list shorter than the tension.
The tears flowed well before the final whistle. Guardiola grew emotional while watching two of his most dedicated players, Bernardo Silva and John Stones, receive guards of honor upon being substituted in the second half. "This is the man who changed everything," the stadium announcer declared. Supporters immediately began chanting "10 more years," prompting Guardiola to shake his head in response.
After securing 17 major trophies and numerous records, Guardiola confirmed on Friday that he could proceed no further. Having transformed City into the Premier League's dominant force and delivering a first Champions League title in 2023, he stated the moment had arrived to pass the torch.
The Numbers That Last
"I will not miss it for a while," he said Sunday. "I feel deeply that it is the right decision."
Former Chelsea coach Enzo Maresca, who claimed the Club World Cup last year, emerges as the leading candidate to succeed him, with an official announcement potentially arriving within the week.
The departing manager offered guidance to his future replacement: "Be yourself, be free with your ideas and work a lot. Everything will be fine."
City fan Fred Taylor, 82, expressed his lasting gratitude: "He means everything to me and this club. What he's done has been absolutely brilliant. I can't think of another manager who's achieved what he has in this 10-year span."
Guardiola took charge in the summer of 2016, guiding the Abu Dhabi-owned club to six Premier League crowns and that historic Champions League victory in 2023. Under his leadership, City became the first team to win four consecutive English league titles and the first to reach 100 points in a single season during 2018. The following year, City completed the domestic treble of league, FA Cup and League Cup.
The Game That Followed
Looking back on that Champions League triumph, Taylor said: "That's what we always wanted. We'd never done it before. That was probably the highlight of his tenure."
Guardiola urged supporters to show affection if they encounter him in the future, saying simply: "I will need it."
The club has commemorated his legacy by naming its newly developed north stand in his honor. He will additionally assume a role as global ambassador.
"I'm sad he's leaving, but I think he's leaving at the right time," Taylor added. "He's accomplished everything possible at this club. He's done brilliantly, and I wish him all the best."
