The Baltimore Orioles placed catcher Adley Rutschman on the 7-day concussion injured list, a roster move confirmed by MLB's official transactions feed on Saturday.
MLB lists the move as retroactive to June 19, 2026, with the description: Baltimore placed Rutschman on the 7-day injured list because of a concussion. The same official feed shows the Orioles recalled outfielder Michael Siani from Triple-A Norfolk.
Rutschman Leaves After Head Contact
MLB Trade Rumors reported that Rutschman was hurt in the ninth inning of Thursday's game against the Seattle Mariners, when a throw by shortstop Colt Emerson hit him in the head on a double-play attempt. Rutschman was removed from that game and did not play the next day against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Manager Craig Albernaz told reporters, including Jacob Calvin Meyer of The Baltimore Sun, that the injury came from a freak incident and that the club would support Rutschman while evaluating him day by day.
Because the placement is retroactive, MLBTR reported that Rutschman is eligible to return June 26 against the Washington Nationals. The timing is still subject to concussion protocol and how he responds over the next several days.
Baltimore Turns To Basallo And Siani
Samuel Basallo is expected to handle the starting catching work while Rutschman is out, with Sam Huff available as the backup, according to MLBTR. Siani joins the active roster as outfield depth after the Orioles recalled him from Norfolk.
Rutschman's absence matters because he has been one of Baltimore's better offensive players this season. MLBTR listed him at .254/.329/.458 with eight home runs and a 118 wRC+ through 228 plate appearances.
Siani, 26, gives Baltimore a defense-first outfield option. MLBTR noted that he made 383 major league plate appearances from 2022 through 2025 and was worth 1.1 fWAR in 2024 largely because of his work in the outfield.
The official transaction is narrow but important: Baltimore loses its starting catcher for at least the short concussion IL window and adds a reserve outfielder while the club waits for Rutschman to clear the required steps.
