Mauricio Pochettino expects to decide next week whether he will remain manager of the United States men's national team after receiving an offer from U.S. Soccer to extend his contract.
The Argentine coach joined the USMNT in September 2024 with a deal running through the 2026 FIFA World Cup on home soil. His current contract expires after the tournament, leaving the federation with a major decision as it begins planning for the next four-year cycle.
Pochettino led the United States to first place in Group D and the team's first knockout-stage victory in 24 years. The campaign ended with a 4-1 defeat to Belgium in the round of 16, a result that created fresh scrutiny despite praise for much of the team's performance during the tournament.
Contract offer could run through 2030
U.S. Soccer reportedly offered Pochettino an extension through the 2030 World Cup before the 2026 tournament began. The federation has remained optimistic about keeping him, while Pochettino consistently said he would wait until the competition ended before deciding his future.
With Argentina and Spain scheduled to meet in Sunday's final at MetLife Stadium, Pochettino has now set a clear timetable. In comments to Spanish outlet Cope, he confirmed that an offer was on the table and said the matter was still being analyzed, with a decision expected next week.
U.S. Soccer said after the Americans were eliminated that it had held positive talks with Pochettino before the World Cup. Both sides agreed to resume discussions after taking time to rest and reflect, and the federation emphasized its respect for the coach, his staff and the wider program.
Chief executive and secretary general JT Batson said Thursday that talks with Pochettino and his staff were active. The federation also acknowledged that substantial work remains at every level even as both sides share optimism about the team's potential.
Club salaries could influence the choice
Finances may form part of Pochettino's decision. His U.S. Soccer salary was reported at roughly $6 million per year, less than half the estimated $13 million to $14 million he earned during his 2023-24 season at Chelsea. He has also managed Tottenham Hotspur and Paris Saint-Germain, and a return to club soccer could offer a substantially larger salary.
Pochettino nevertheless appeared to build a strong relationship with the U.S. players. His World Cup messages focused not only on results but also on expanding soccer's audience in the country. Veteran captain Tim Ream told ESPN that the squad repeatedly discussed how its performances could inspire more people to follow the game and support the national team.
The decision will shape more than the coaching position. If Pochettino accepts the extension, U.S. Soccer can begin the 2030 cycle with continuity in its technical leadership. If he leaves, the federation will need to identify a successor while assessing the progress and shortcomings of a home World Cup campaign.
