The Miami Marlins reinstated outfielder Griffin Conine from the 60-day injured list and designated Christopher Morel for assignment on Sunday afternoon, a pair of MLB roster moves that put Conine straight back into the lineup at loanDepot park.
MLB.com's Marlins page, in a report by Christina De Nicola, said Conine started in right field and hit second for the series finale against the San Francisco Giants. The club's official transactions page separately listed the June 21 move, confirming Conine's activation from the 60-day IL and Morel's designation for assignment.
Conine Returns To Miami Lineup
The move gives Miami another left-handed outfield bat after Conine's injury absence. The Marlins had sent him on a rehab assignment to Triple-A Jacksonville on June 16, according to the transactions page, then activated him five days later.
Conine's MLB player page lists him as a 28-year-old left fielder and shows a 2026 line of .250 with two home runs, four RBIs, two steals and an .875 OPS in 24 at-bats entering the update. His career line is .259 with seven homers, 24 RBIs and a .771 OPS in 185 regular-season at-bats.
The same player page's news feed said in April that Conine was set for surgery on a torn left hamstring and would miss six to eight weeks. Miami later transferred him from the 10-day IL to the 60-day IL on June 1 with a left hamstring strain, which matches the roster path that ended Sunday.
Morel Loses Marlins Roster Spot
Morel, 26, is listed by MLB.com as a first baseman. His Marlins player page shows a difficult 2026 line: .162 with no home runs, one RBI, one stolen base and a .425 OPS in 68 at-bats. The broader track record is more substantial, with 74 career home runs, 211 RBIs and a .703 OPS in 1,648 regular-season at-bats.
That contrast is the roster story. Miami chose the healthy returning outfielder over a right-handed bat whose 2026 production had not matched his career power profile. The team did not need a standings angle or a speculative trade motive for the move to matter; the transaction itself changes the active roster.
The timing also fits a club reshaping its depth in small pieces. The Marlins placed catcher Liam Hicks on the 10-day IL and selected Brian Navarreto's contract the same day, while Conine's activation and Morel's DFA handled the outfield and corner-infield side of the roster.
