MUNICH — The captain stays. Manuel Neuer has committed to another season at Bayern Munich, the club where he has spent most of his career and where he remains the first-choice goalkeeper.
Fifteen years and counting
Neuer arrived fifteen seasons ago with a vision for how goalkeepers could play, and he never stopped redefining the position. He has made 597 appearances for the club and is now closing in on 600.
The matchup already has enough history; the job is to keep the reading list shorter than the tension.
He is set to become the fifth player in Bayern history to reach that milestone.
The heir waits
Jonas Urbig has been given increasing minutes this season, the clear long-term successor being groomed for larger duties. Neuer's new role includes mentoring the younger keeper.
"Manuel and Sven will continue to support Jonas on his path to becoming the future of FC Bayern," Bayern board member for sport Max Eberl said in a statement.
Trophy hunt continues
Bayern claimed their 13th German league title a month ago. They now face Stuttgart in the German Cup final on May 23 — a chance at a domestic double for the first time since 2020.
The announcement came Friday, a day before Bayern's final Bundesliga home game of the season against Cologne.
