The Orlando Magic are adding Riley Crean, Mfon Udofia and DJ Bakker as assistant coaches on new head coach Sean Sweeney's NBA staff, according to Hoops Rumors, which cited reporting from Michael Scotto of HoopsHype.
The staff moves give Sweeney three more development-oriented voices as Orlando builds out its bench under a first-time head coach. No contract terms were reported, and no official Magic announcement was quickly available during verification, so the hires are being treated as reported staff additions rather than a club-issued release.
Crean Rejoins Sweeney After Dallas Overlap
Crean comes from the Dallas Mavericks, where Hoops Rumors identified him as a video coordinator. That connection matters because Sweeney worked in the Dallas organization from 2021-25 before spending this past season as a top assistant with the San Antonio Spurs.
Hoops Rumors also noted that Crean is 27 and is the son of former college coach and current broadcaster Tom Crean. The basketball surname is familiar, but the more relevant point for Orlando is the shared Dallas background with Sweeney. New head coaches often lean on at least one staff member who understands their preferred terminology and daily workflow.
Udofia Moves From Long Island To Orlando
Udofia is the G League development hire. Hoops Rumors reported that he was the Long Island Nets' G League coach, and NetsDaily separately confirmed that Udofia had been hired by Orlando as an assistant.
NetsDaily reported that Udofia spent three seasons as Long Island's head coach, had the most coaching wins in the franchise's history and helped the club finish .500 or better in each season. The outlet also credited him with helping players including Drew Timme and Killian Hayes earn NBA opportunities.
His background also extends beyond the G League. Hoops Rumors reported that Udofia served as Nigeria's head coach during the FIBA AfroBasket 2021 qualifiers and was an assistant at the 2019 FIBA World Cup.
Bakker Brings NBA And G League Experience
Bakker comes from Charlotte's staff. Hoops Rumors reported that he was both a Hornets assistant and the head coach of the G League's Greensboro Swarm.
The report also said Bakker previously worked as an assistant in Milwaukee and Detroit, including a Detroit overlap with Sweeney. That gives Orlando another assistant with NBA bench experience and G League head-coaching work.
The shape of Sweeney's staff is clear enough from these hires. Crean brings familiarity from Dallas, Udofia brings player-development and international coaching experience, and Bakker brings a mix of NBA assistant and G League head-coaching work.
