Lens overwhelmed by Lille 3-0 in Derby du Nord halted by chanting

The Result Has A Second Meaning

Lens was comfortably beaten 3-0 by northern rivals Lille at Stade Pierre-Mauroy on Saturday, a result that dents the visitors' Ligue 1 title ambitions. The match itself was interrupted in the 35th minute after discriminatory chanting from the home sections forced the referee to briefly consider abandoning the game.

The stadium announcer urged Lille fans to stop the insults directed at the Lens supporters, and the referee threatened to lead both teams back to the dressing room before play resumed.

The trophy did not need much decoration; the season had already done most of the talking.

Hákón Haraldsson gave Lille a halftime lead, finishing a swift counterattack sparked by a long, precise pass from captain Aïssa Mandi. The young forward burst down the left flank, slipped the ball between two defenders, and found the unmarked Haraldsson at the far post.

Matthieu Udol's poor back pass presented Lille's second goal. Nidal Celik let the ball run, and Felix Correia intercepted it ahead of goalkeeper Robin Risser, sliding the ball into an empty net in the 50th minute.

The Part Worth Keeping

Lens was awarded a penalty when Ismaëlo Ganiou handled the ball in the box, but Fernandez-Pardo wrongfooted Risser from the spot to complete the scoring.

Earlier, Paris Saint-Germain defeated Toulouse 3-1 to open a four-point gap at the top of the table. PSG holds a game in hand over second-placed Lens, putting the champions in an ideal position to retain their title with rounds remaining.

In Brittany, Rennes edged Brest 4-3 in a spectacular encounter. Esteban Lepaul scored twice from the penalty spot, including the winner in the 74th minute, despite Junior Dina Ebimbe's brace for the home side. Rennes moves to sixth place, three points behind Lille.
