PISA, Italy — Lecce beat Pisa 2-1 on Friday, sending the Tuscan club straight back down to Serie B after a season it would rather forget. Pisa managed only two wins from 35 games.
The result also sealed Verona's fate. Second-from-bottom with 19 points, one clear of Pisa but unreachable now against a Lecce side sitting fourth-to-last on 32 points, Verona joins the drop.
The table did the dramatic work without asking anyone to dress it up.
Lameck Banda had Pisa ahead in the 52nd minute. Mehdi Léris pulled Lecce level four minutes later, and Walid Cheddira's 65th-minute winner gave the visitors a four-point cushion over the relegation zone with three matches remaining.
Venezia, meanwhile, did enough. A 2-2 draw with Spezia secured the point Giovanni Stroppa's team needed to seal promotion from Serie B. They lead the table, one point clear of Frosinone, who can still join them with a result against Mantova next Friday.
