Kobbie Mainoo was ruled out of England's World Cup third-place playoff against France on Saturday after an unspecified injury kept the Manchester United midfielder out of the matchday squad.
The injury was recorded on England's official team sheet at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami and confirmed by the English Football Association. The governing body did not disclose the nature or severity of the problem.
Mainoo's wait for World Cup minutes continued
Mainoo traveled to the stadium with England but was not named among Thomas Tuchel's substitutes. His absence meant the 21-year-old finished the tournament without making an appearance.
The midfielder arrived at the World Cup after a strong end to Manchester United's domestic season and a nomination for the Premier League Young Player of the Year award. That club form did not translate into an opportunity with England during the tournament.
Earlier reports said Tuchel considered using Mainoo in place of a less-than-fully-fit Declan Rice after England's opening group match. The manager was reportedly dissatisfied with Mainoo's training performance and continued to select other midfield options.
England changed its lineup for the playoff
The match against France appeared to offer Mainoo a possible route into the team because Tuchel made seven changes. Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham were among the senior players left out of the starting lineup, but Mainoo's injury removed him from consideration.
Sky Sports News reported during the tournament that Mainoo had grown frustrated and discouraged as his place in the selection order became clearer. He did not publicly address those reports and generally passed through postmatch media areas without speaking.
Jordan Henderson, by contrast, was named on the bench despite suffering a broken arm while celebrating England's victory over Mexico. The Brentford midfielder did not enter the match.
England have not provided a recovery timetable
No timetable was given for Mainoo's recovery, leaving Manchester United to await further information after the tournament. The injury closed the final opportunity for him to earn his first minutes of England's World Cup campaign.
The episode completed a difficult international summer for a player who had entered the competition in strong club form. Attention will now turn to his fitness and role when he returns to Manchester United.
