The 2026 NBA Finals between the New York Knicks and San Antonio Spurs averaged 20.6 million viewers on ABC and ESPN, making it the league's most-watched Finals since 1998, the NBA said in an official release.
The league framed the five-game series as a broad commercial and media surge, citing multi-decade highs across television viewership, social engagement and merchandise sales after New York's championship run.
Knicks-Spurs Finals Hits 28-Year High
Game 5, when the Knicks clinched their first NBA title in 53 years, averaged 24.5 million viewers and peaked at 33 million at 11:15 p.m. ET. The NBA said that made it the most-watched Finals Game 5 since 1998.
The full postseason also reached a 28-year high across ABC, ESPN, Amazon Prime Video, NBC and Peacock. The Finals broadcasts on ABC and ESPN delivered a 38.3 share, which the league called the highest share for a Finals on record.
Those figures matter because the matchup paired one of the league's biggest media markets with a San Antonio team back on the Finals stage. The league did not need a seven-game series to produce its strongest Finals audience in nearly three decades.
Social And Merchandise Records Follow
The NBA said the series generated a record 15 billion social-media views and counting, nearly triple the previous Finals record set in 2025. Game 5 alone produced more than 4 billion views, passing the single-game mark set during Game 4.
The league also said eight postseason games topped one billion social views, another sign that the Finals audience was not limited to the television window.
Merchandise followed the same pattern. In the first 24 hours after the clinching win, the Knicks set an all-time Fanatics record for any championship team across all sports, according to the NBA release.
The 2026 Finals also set a league record for merchandise sales across NBAStore.com, Fanatics, team stores and third-party retail. Finals merchandise sales doubled the previous NBA Finals record from 2020, giving the league a clean business headline from a short series.
