James Sands has returned to New York City FC from his loan at FC St. Pauli and signed a long-term contract extension, the MLS club announced through MLSsoccer.com.
The 25-year-old homegrown midfielder is now under contract through the 2029-30 season, with New York City FC holding an option for 2030-31. The move brings Sands back to MLS after a Bundesliga spell in Germany.
Sands Returns From FC St. Pauli Loan
MLS listed the transaction as a return and extension. Sands had been loaned to FC St. Pauli in January 2025 and recorded one goal and one assist in 35 games while the German club competed in the Bundesliga.
The deal gives NYCFC a familiar midfield piece with European minutes added to his profile. Sporting director Todd Dunivant said the club was excited to welcome Sands back and pointed to his MLS experience and recent time abroad as part of the fit.
Sands first debuted for New York City FC in 2017. MLSsoccer.com lists him with one goal and five assists in 143 appearances across all competitions for the club.
NYCFC Bring Back First Homegrown Signing
Sands was NYCFC's first homegrown signing and was part of the team that won MLS Cup in 2021. His return gives the club a player tied to both its academy pathway and its championship season.
The move also keeps an American international in the league. Sands has earned 14 USMNT caps and was part of the United States squad that won the 2021 Concacaf Gold Cup.
For NYCFC, the important part is the length of the commitment. This is not a short loan recall; it is a multi-year extension that positions Sands as a core roster piece as the club moves past the midseason break.
