Eddie Howe is expected to leave his position as Newcastle head coach less than a month before the new Premier League season begins. The impending departure has been reported by the BBC and the Press Association.
Howe has led Newcastle for nearly five years, overseeing the end of the Saudi-backed club’s long wait for silverware while also securing Champions League qualification twice.
His most recent match in charge may have been Newcastle’s 4-1 preseason friendly defeat against Bristol City. That result came during a difficult summer in which several important members of the squad have departed.
Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali have both left Newcastle during the current transfer window. Captain Bruno Guimaraes could follow them, with speculation continuing over his future at the club.
The turnover follows another significant departure last year, when Newcastle sold leading scorer Alexander Isak. The club subsequently finished the season in 12th place and failed to qualify for the Champions League.
Howe was appointed in November 2021, the same year Newcastle was bought by Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund. He went on to guide the club back into the Champions League on two occasions and delivered the English League Cup last year.
That cup victory ended Newcastle’s 70-year wait for a major domestic trophy. It represented the clearest achievement of Howe’s tenure and gave the club its first major silverware in decades.
Despite the backing of its Saudi ownership, Newcastle has not developed into the dominant European force established by Abu Dhabi-backed Manchester City or Qatar-backed Paris Saint-Germain. Financial regulations have limited how heavily the club’s owners can spend on the squad.
Those restrictions have required Newcastle to sell leading players before reinvesting in replacements. The departures of Isak, Gordon and Tonali, along with the uncertainty surrounding Bruno Guimaraes, have left the club facing substantial squad changes as Howe prepares to leave.
