TSG Hoffenheim head coach Christian Ilzer has signed a long-term contract extension after guiding the Bundesliga club back into European football, Bundesliga.com reported.
The German league's official site said Hoffenheim rewarded Ilzer with an unspecified long-term deal following a 2025-26 season in which the Sinsheim club secured a place in the UEFA Europa League.
Ilzer Rewarded After Hoffenheim Rise
Ilzer replaced Pellegrino Matarazzo in November 2024. Bundesliga.com described the Austrian as having taken Hoffenheim from relegation candidates to European participants across his first full season in charge.
The concrete jump was substantial. Hoffenheim finished the 2025-26 Bundesliga campaign with 61 points, the club's second-best points tally in the league and enough to return to Europe.
Bundesliga.com also noted wins over Borussia Dortmund, RB Leipzig and Bayer Leverkusen during that campaign. The article framed the extension as part of a broader club push after Hoffenheim also recently extended Andrej Kramaric.
Schicker Backs Long-Term Project
Sporting director Andreas Schicker praised Ilzer's tactical clarity, intensity and leadership in the club announcement. He also pointed to Hoffenheim developing talents and increasing market value under the coaching staff.
The extension follows a sharp change in direction from the year before. Bundesliga.com's photo caption noted that Ilzer had secured Hoffenheim's top-flight status in 2024-25 after finishing three points clear of the relegation playoff.
Hoffenheim's latest finish was their best since Julian Nagelsmann led the club to third place in 2017-18. The new deal keeps the 48-year-old coach attached to a project that now has domestic league progress and European football to manage at the same time.
