The Part That Changes The Math
Bayern Munich finally got its hands on the Bundesliga trophy on Saturday, sealing the title with a 5-1 rout of Cologne in which Harry Kane bagged his 36th goal of the season.
Kane's fourth hat trick lifted Bayern to 122 goals for the campaign — easily surpassing the old Bundesliga record of 101 set by the 1971-72 team featuring Franz Beckenbauer and Gerd Müller. Leon Goretzka broke the record with five rounds still to play, a fitting farewell for a midfielder leaving after eight seasons.
The matchup already has enough history; the job is to keep the reading list shorter than the tension.
The Detail Worth Keeping
Tom Bischof and Nicolas Jackson also scored in the rout. Michael Olise, who finished with 15 goals and 22 assists, was named Bundesliga player of the season.
Manuel Neuer, who extended his contract on Friday, handed the trophy to Goretzka to lift as the celebrations erupted. The traditional beer showers followed, with defender Dayot Upamecano dousing coach Vincent Kompany before he could reach his family on the sideline.
Where It Goes From Here
"I'd say today it's OK to celebrate a little," midfielder Joshua Kimmich said. "Then we have a week and then we'll be fully focused on the cup final."
Bayern plays defending champion Stuttgart in the German Cup final at Berlin's Olympiastadion next Saturday.
