Greenwood's 15th goal lifts Marseille to third in Ligue 1

The Pressure Shows Up Early

PARIS — Mason Greenwood moved clear at the top of Ligue 1's scoring chart with his 15th goal, converting a cross from Igor Paixão in the 17th minute to give Marseille a 1-0 win at Toulouse and lift the club into third place.

The English forward's strike proved enough for Marseille's first clean sheet since mid-December, a stretch that had seen them slip from genuine title contenders to a team now fighting only for Champions League qualification. The top three spots in France earn direct entry; fourth goes to the playoffs.

The table did the dramatic work without asking anyone to dress it up.

Toulouse forward Yann Gboho, who had scored in the midweek French Cup quarterfinal that knocked Marseille out, struck the crossbar 10 minutes after the break. The defense held firm this time.

Marseille is now one point ahead of Lyon, which can reclaim third spot by winning at Paris FC on Sunday. That match carries extra weight: Lyon has lost two league games and been eliminated from the cup in recent weeks, leaving them with little left to play for beyond the qualifying places.

The Detail That Tilts It

In Saturday's other results, Nantes fell 1-0 at home to Angers and stayed 17th in the 18-team table, deepening a relegation fight that has become seasonal routine for the club. Strasbourg played 0-0 at Auxerre, holding eighth place while its forward Joaquín Panichelli watched from the bench until the second half.

Panichelli's substitution timing raised eyebrows given he entered with the match already decided and Strasbourg managing a draw. Whether that was tactical caution or something more deliberate remains unclear, but the forward's benching meant he remained one goal behind Greenwood in the scoring race.

The result also cleared space near the top: PSG's 3-1 home loss to Monaco on Friday opened the door for Lens, which can move within one point of the lead by beating Metz on Sunday.
