ROME — Gennaro Gattuso has been officially hired as Lazio coach, giving the Serie A club a new lead voice after the departure of Maurizio Sarri.
Lazio confirmed the appointment in a short statement and did not release contract details. Italian media reported that Gattuso agreed to a two-year deal, but the club’s announcement kept the focus on the coaching change rather than the terms.
The club said it had appointed Gattuso as head coach of the first team and pointed to his experience, professionalism and determination as qualities it expects to help Lazio pursue its sporting objectives.
Gattuso, 48, arrives after leaving the Italy job following the Azzurri’s failure to qualify for another World Cup. That exit ended a difficult spell with the national team and moved him back into the club game.
His Serie A coaching background includes previous jobs with AC Milan and Napoli. At Napoli, he won the Italian Cup in 2020, one of the clearest achievements on his coaching record.
At Lazio, Gattuso takes over from Maurizio Sarri, who has since been appointed Atalanta coach. The move gives Lazio a manager with deep Italian football experience as the club resets its bench.
