The Part That Changes The Math
FIFA expanded World Cup squad sizes from 23 to 26 for the 2022 tournament in Qatar, but more roster slots have made decisions harder for managers. With the 2026 World Cup approaching, several high-profile players have been left out.
Cole Palmer was omitted from England's roster despite previously earning 14 caps for the Three Lions. The Chelsea playmaker made only three appearances under manager Thomas Tuchel. Tuchel cited Palmer's lack of influence throughout the season.
The matchup already has enough history; the job is to keep the reading list shorter than the tension.
Phil Foden was also left out. The Manchester City star struggled to secure a regular place despite long being regarded as too talented to omit. Tuchel publicly criticized Foden's performances in March.
Harry Maguire was omitted despite enjoying a resurgent campaign with Manchester United. The defender had appeared in England's March friendlies but was left shocked by the final decision. John Stones and Jarell Quansah were selected instead.
The Detail Worth Keeping
Trent Alexander-Arnold was not included in England's squad.
Eduardo Camavinga was omitted from France's roster. The Real Madrid midfielder has struggled with injuries and consistency. Adrien Rabiot and N'Golo Kanté were selected instead.
Jeremie Frimpong was overlooked by Netherlands manager Ronald Koeman.
Dean Huijsen was omitted despite earning seven caps since early 2025 and starring for Bournemouth before his move to Real Madrid. Barcelona's Pau Cubarsí and Atlético Madrid's Marc Pubill were preferred.
Where It Goes From Here
Mateus Fernandes was omitted despite impressing at West Ham United. The midfielder earned recognition from Portugal manager Roberto Martínez in March but was not selected.
Franco Mastantuono will not compete at his first World Cup. The 18-year-old joined Real Madrid from River Plate and made his Argentina debut before moving to Spain, but managed only three goals in his debut season.
Paulo Dybala was also omitted from Argentina's squad.
