Former Detroit Lions center Frank Ragnow said a failed 2025 comeback attempt confirmed the physical reality behind his abrupt NFL retirement, with NFL.com reporting that a failed physical and a Grade 3 hamstring strain ended the bid before it reached the field.
Ragnow spoke to reporters at his charity event in Michigan, his first public comments since the comeback attempt fell apart. The former Lions lineman said he had tried to push himself back toward football but eventually had to listen to what his body was telling him.
Ragnow's Comeback Stopped At The Physical
NFL.com wrote that Ragnow retired a little over a year ago, a decision that came before Detroit's offensive line problems in 2025. The center later considered a return during the season as the Lions struggled to replace him.
That plan did not get far. NFL.com reported that Ragnow's physical failed and that a Grade 3 hamstring strain scuttled the comeback idea.
Ragnow also described feeling guilty while watching quarterback Jared Goff take hits, according to NFL.com's account of his comments. He still landed on the same conclusion, saying in the article that "everything happens for a reason."
Detroit Rebuilds The Offensive Line For 2026
Ragnow started 96 games for the Lions over seven seasons after Detroit drafted him in the first round in 2018. He made four Pro Bowls and was named second-team All-Pro in each of his final two campaigns.
Those credentials explain why the Lions felt the absence so quickly. A center with that resume is not replaced by changing one name on the depth chart, and Detroit's offseason work shows the scale of the reset.
NFL.com listed the Lions' 2026 line changes as signing center Cade Mays, moving Penei Sewell to left tackle, releasing Taylor Decker and drafting right tackle Blake Miller in the first round. The team is also looking for improved seasons from young guards Tate Ratledge and Christian Mahogany.
The useful lesson is not complicated. Ragnow's retirement removed one of Detroit's most dependable pieces, his comeback attempt ended before it could become a solution, and the Lions have had to rebuild the front with that reality fixed in place.
