Five Players to Watch at FIFA World Cup

The Result Carries Weight

Toronto gets six FIFA World Cup games starting June 12, when Canada opens Group L against Bosnia and Herzegovina. Here are some visiting players worth watching in the city.

Florian Wirtz, Germany

The matchup already has enough history; the job is to keep the reading list shorter than the tension.

The German attack runs through the 23-year-old who plays for Bayern Munich. He's got nine goals in 41 senior appearances for his country since his 2021 debut. Not bad for a player still growing into his frame.

The Moment That Swung It

Jamal Musiala, Germany

Musiala will be another focal point for Germany as the team tries to climb back into contention. The Bayern midfielder has 48 goals in 154 club caps and helped the Bavarians win five straight Bundesliga titles. At 23, he's already among the most dangerous attacking midfielders in the world.

Antoine Semenyo, Ghana

The Race Tightens

The 26-year-old forward made waves in the Premier League. He started the 2025-26 season with Bournemouth, managing 10 goals and three assists in 20 matches before moving to Manchester City. Since the transfer, he's scored seven goals with one assist in 17 games for City. Ghana's second straight World Cup appearance includes a Group L game against Panama on June 17 in Toronto.

Modric, Croatia

The 40-year-old captain is set to appear at his fifth World Cup, which is somewhat remarkable when you think about what that many tournaments does to a player's body. Modric led Croatia to the 2018 World Cup final, winning the Golden Ball as the tournament's best player, and took third place in 2022. He spent 13 seasons with Real Madrid, winning the 2018 Ballon d'Or along the way. Croatia plays Panama in Group L on June 23 in Toronto.
