Fernando Tatis Jr. hits first 2026 home run after weeks-long drought

The Result Under The Result

Fernando Tatis Jr. is finally on the board. Saturday at Nationals Park, the San Diego Padres star Slugged his first home run of 2026, a 451-foot shot to left field off Washington Nationals lefty Foster Griffin. The pitch was a 91 mph fastball caught too much of the plate, and Tatis did the rest.

Tatis knew the moment he made contact, raising his arms as he left the batter's box. It was less a celebration than a sigh of relief. The drought had clearly been weighing on him—his previous longest homer was a 467-foot shot on Sept. 30, 2021.

The title of the job changes quickly; the explanation usually takes a little longer to catch up.

The Useful Context

The location matters. Tatis pulled the ball, and that's where his power typically lives. This season, he's pulling the ball in the air only 6.9% of the time—the third-lowest rate among qualified hitters and well below the league average of 16.8%. You cannot hit many homers pulling the ball that rarely.

His first homer came in his 239th plate appearance, the most of anyone in MLB this season who can actually hit for power. For context, Chandler Simpson (Rays) went 227 plate appearances without a homer, Nick Gonzales (Pirates) managed 207, and Nasim Nuñez (Nationals) finished at 196.

The Part Still Unclear

Tatis entered Saturday hitting.268/.345/.307—an on-base profile right where it's been since 2022, but with virtually zero extra-base punch. From 2022 through now, he's averaged 24 homers per year and 29 per 162 games. Saturday was May 30.
