The Roster Takes Shape
Marco Bielsa revealed Uruguay’s 26‑man squad for the 2026 World Cup on Sunday, naming 39‑year‑old goalkeeper Fernando Muslera to his fifth finals.
Muslera returned after stepping away in 2024 with 133 caps and a Copa América triumph in 2011.
The list looks clean on paper; the hard part is everything that happens after it is printed.
The Margins Are Thin
Veteran striker Luis Suárez, Uruguay’s all‑time top scorer with 69 goals in 143 matches, was omitted even though he announced his retirement from the national team in September 2024 and said in early May that he hoped to be called up.
Ranked No. 17 in the world, Uruguay will face Spain, Saudi Arabia and Cape Verde in Group H.
The Next Test Arrives
The roster also includes Federico Valverde (Real Madrid), Ronald Araúio (Barcelona), Manuel Ugarte (Manchester United), Rodrigo Bentancur (Tottenham), and Darwin Núñez (Al Hilal).
