Etienne Departure Creates Opportunity in Jaguars Backfield Battle

Rodriguez has been absent from Jaguars OTAs with an undisclosed issue, Sports Illustrated's John Shipley reports. That timing is awkward, given that Travis Etienne just left for the Saints after logging 260 carries across 17 games last season.

Bhayshul Tuten, Rodriguez and LeQuint Allen now appear positioned to handle the Jaguars ground game. How touches divide in 2026 remains unclear, but Tuten has looked sharp during the offseason program. Allen figures to operate primarily in passing situations.

The title of the job changes quickly; the explanation usually takes a little longer to catch up.

Coach Liam Coen called the starting role "wide open," which is coach-speak for "we're still figuring it out." A committee approach seems plausible, with both Tuten and Rodriguez capable of producing fantasy-relevant numbers without Etienne in the picture.

Rodriguez's next opportunity to practice arrives at Jacksonville's mandatory minicamp, scheduled for June 9-11. Until then, the depth chart stays in limbo.
