Egypt defender Mohamed Hany became the first player in World Cup history to record two own-goals in the same tournament, with the second coming during Egypt’s round of 32 match against Australia in Arlington, Texas.
The decisive sequence came in the 55th minute, when Australia midfielder Aiden O’Neill sent in a free kick. The ball struck Hany’s head and went into the net, bringing Australia level with Egypt at 1-1.
Only minutes earlier, Hany had stayed down after a collision with Australia midfielder Connor Metcalfe as both players challenged for the ball near the same net. Egypt teammates quickly called for assistance, and Hany received attention on the field for several minutes.
Medical personnel waited nearby with a stretcher, but it was not used. Hany was checked after what appeared to be concern over a possible concussion and was allowed to continue in the match.
The own-goal added to a difficult tournament marker for Hany. He also put the ball into his own net in Egypt’s 1-1 draw with Belgium during the group stage.
Australia was appearing in a World Cup knockout match for the third time. The Socceroos previously lost 1-0 to Italy in 2006 and were beaten 2-1 by Argentina in 2022, when their only goal also came through an own-goal.
The sequence against Egypt gave Australia a way back into the match after falling behind, while Hany’s second own-goal placed him alone in an unusual World Cup record category.
