Christopher Sánchez's historic scoreless streak concluded Wednesday night as the Phillies edged the Padres 3-2 at home. Jackson Merrill delivered a two-out RBI single in the seventh inning, driving in Ty France from second base to break up Sánchez's bid for a perfect game and end the legendary run.
The right-hander had not allowed a run since the first inning against the San Francisco Giants on April 30, a span of 50⅔ innings. Sánchez permitted four hits and one walk while striking out eight batters over seven innings in the finale.

The Useful Context
Sánchez became just the second pitcher in MLB history—joining Orel Hershiser—to log five scoreless starts in a calendar month without opening a game. He threw at least seven innings in each of his five May appearances and earned NL Pitcher of the Month honors.
Last season, Sánchez finished as the NL Cy Young runner-up behind Paul Skenes, logging 202 innings with a 2.50 ERA and leading all pitchers with 8.0 WAR. Philadelphia signed him to a six-year, $107 million extension in March.
