Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice has been released from Dallas County Jail in Texas after completing a 30-day sentence tied to a probation violation from his 2024 high-speed car crash case.
The violation followed a positive THC test on May 19. According to CBS News Texas, Rice did not answer reporters’ questions after his release and left in a waiting vehicle.
Rice had pleaded guilty to felony charges last summer and received probation, with a Dallas County judge allowing the jail portion of the sentence to be served during the probation period. The violation required him to serve the 30 days immediately.
Rice continued knee rehab while in custody
The jail term came at a difficult point in Rice’s offseason. About one week before entering custody, he had surgery to remove loose bodies from his right knee, the same knee injured in September 2024 when he tore his LCL and damaged his hamstring tendon and PCL in a collision with Patrick Mahomes.
Rice missed a meaningful part of the Chiefs’ offseason program, including OTAs and mandatory minicamp. Kansas City still expects him to be ready around training camp, barring setbacks.
Chiefs vice president of sports medicine and performance Rick Burkholder stayed in contact with Rice and the jail about the rehab plan. Andy Reid said Rick had handled much of that communication and credited the jail for allowing Rice to continue the work he needed.
NFL discipline remains part of Rice’s outlook
Rice already served an NFL suspension without pay for the first six games of the 2025 season after the league determined his role in the hit-and-run crash violated the personal conduct policy.
The latest probation violation creates another question for the league because it involved a failed THC test and a jail sentence. The NFL also reviewed an accusation from Dacoda Jones earlier this year and determined Rice had not violated the personal conduct policy in that matter.
If Rice avoids another suspension and completes his knee recovery on schedule, he would enter 2026 with a clear route back into a central role in the Kansas City offense. He has not played more than eight games in a season since 2023.
Rice remains the Chiefs’ most direct option for heavy wide receiver targets, with Xavier Worthy and Tyquan Thornton also in the group and Travis Kelce returning at tight end. Mahomes’ own ACL recovery is another factor for the offense, with Justin Fields positioned as the alternative if the quarterback’s rehab extends beyond Week 1.
Kenneth Walker III’s addition to the backfield could also change how defenses handle Kansas City, giving Rice and the passing game more space once he and Mahomes are back on the field together.
